THE EFFECTS OF MEAT OVERCONSUMPTION ON GLOBAL HEALTH AND ENVIRONMENT

Meat overconsumption can have serious negative impacts on both global health and the environment. Here are some ways that excessive meat consumption can affect both health and the environment:

  • Greenhouse gas emissions: Meat production contributes significantly to greenhouse gas emissions. High consumption of meat, particularly beef and lamb, can lead to increased greenhouse gas emissions and contribute to climate change, which in turn can have negative impacts on global health through natural disasters, changes in weather patterns, and the spread of diseases.

  • Land use and habitat destruction: Livestock production requires large areas of land for grazing and growing feed crops. Excessive meat consumption can lead to the expansion of livestock production and deforestation, and human health through habitat destruction, biodiversity loss, loss of natural resources and potential spread of zoonotic diseases.

  • Increased risk of chronic diseases: Excessive consumption of red and processed meat is associated with an increased risk of chronic diseases such as heart disease, diabetes and certain types of cancer that can adversely affect global health.

  • Antibiotic resistance: The use of antibiotics in meat production can contribute to the development of antibiotic-resistant bacteria, which can have negative impacts on both human and animal health.

  • Water use and pollution: As mentioned earlier, meat production requires large amounts of water for drinking and irrigation, which can lead to water scarcity in regions where water is already scarce. In addition, livestock waste can contribute to pollution of soil and waterways, which can have negative impacts on human health through the contamination of food and water sources.

To promote both global health and environmental sustainability, it is recommended to reduce meat consumption, especially red and processed meats and eat a balance rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains and plant-based protein sources. A focus on a well-balanced and varied diet is recommended, such as Ikarian Diet. In addition, sourcing meat from sustainable and responsible sources helps reduce the negative environmental impact of meat production and promotes animal welfare.
