Many people believe eating healthily costs more. That can be true for trendy superfoods, but the traditional Ikarian diet was the food of farmers and fishermen with little money.
Cheap staples
Its staples are some of the cheapest foods in any shop: dried beans, lentils and chickpeas, potatoes, onions, seasonal vegetables, oats and bread. A large pot of lentil soup costs very little and feeds a family for two days.
Ways to save
Buy legumes dried and in bulk, cook in batches and freeze portions, choose seasonal produce, grow a few herbs on a windowsill, and use leftovers in salads, soups and omelettes. Spend a little more on good olive oil, which you will use every day.
The hidden cost
Unhealthy diets carry hidden costs too, in long-term health. Simple home cooking is often the best value for both your wallet and your body.
